To Niche or Not to Niche? The Struggle is Seery-Us.
Running a small business is like being on a never-ending episode of Choose Your Own Adventure.
Do I lock myself into a tight, picture-perfect niche so my audience always knows exactly what I do? Or do I break the box entirely, toss the lid, and run free like the creative chaos gremlin I am?
Both options sound good… until you’re actually in it.
Because here’s the truth nobody tells you:
Niche too small, and you feel trapped. Go too wide, and people get confused. Either way, you’ll end up questioning everything especially when you’re in the middle of a late-night brainstorming session wondering if offering rhinestone trays AND 3d prints AND custom signs is “brand confusion” or “brilliant variety.” Like really how many rhinestones trays can 1 person NEED?
The Expansion Trap
When you finally get the courage to expand your offerings, the excitement is real… but so is the overwhelm.
What do I add first? Which products do I test? Do I stick with what people know me for or take a leap into something new?
It’s like standing at a buffet where you could pile your plate high with everything, but you know if you overdo it, something’s gonna spill. And that spill? Yeah, that’s money, time, and your last nerve hitting the floor.
The Real Struggle
Balancing passion and profit is exhausting. Every product you add isn’t just “oh, let’s sell this”; it’s research, testing, sourcing, pricing, branding, marketing, and hoping your people love it enough to keep it on the shelves.
Some days you feel like you’ve got it all figured out. Other days you’re staring at your product lineup like it’s a multiple-choice test you forgot to study for.
The Bottom Line
Finding a niche, staying out of the box, or expanding… none of it is easy. The trick is figuring out how to grow without losing yourself in the process.
And honestly? That “process” is messy, unpredictable, and not nearly as social media-pretty as people think. But it’s also where the magic happens, where your visionz become reality and your brand becomes yours.
So whether you’re a niche queen, a product rebel, or somewhere in between… the struggle is real, but so is the payoff. Keep building. Keep trying. Keep creating.
